That's a wonderful recording you made of Guinga and Harvey Wainapel. I hadn't heard Harvey's playing before - he sounds great. And thanks for the comment on my blog - it's nice to connect with another Guinga fan. I discovered his music when I was reviewing CDs for a newspaper and started getting discs from Velas. What ever happened to Velas?

I was sitting in a small Mexican cafe last night, down by the SF airport, with my old friend, Gary. The 1960's surf hit, Misirilou, came on the restaurant radio system. Immediately, I flashed back to Ron, in his Fiesta Gardens garage in 1965, as he doublepicked that tune to perfection on his solid body Gibson. Basically, Mr. Clegg has not changed in 43 years. Whether he tackles surf music or jazz, Ron displays the master subtle touch, accented with his own brand of pure joy and giggles.

That's a very cool sound... Love everything about it, both instruments played in a stylish manner and respecting each other. Very nice indeed. Nice Blog too.

I'm sure there are thousands of people with great memories of past performances at the Ash Grove. I only went there one time, but it was a doozy. Lightnin' Hopkins opened for Freddie King. It's hard to upstage the awesome Lightnin', but Freddie King was something to behold. His band started his show with this funky instrumental blues riff. As the room darkened, a bright spotlight focused on Freddie at the back entrance, dressed in black, with his top two buttons opened to show his muscular pecs. Freddie announced the members of his band, saving the final introduction for his guitar, Lucille, as he hit a note that nearly tore off the roof. I still say this was the best electric blues performance of my life. Just every stop was pulled, by the electrifying Mr. King.
